The Meaning of Namaste
Namaste is the traditional Indian way of greeting one another. It is a courteous gesture that embodies respect and equality. By putting the ego aside and placing the palms together, with a slight bow of the head, one communicates that “The divine in me bows to the divine in you.” It is a message greatly needed in a world so full of ego and division.
I had the pleasure of working on a series of paintings depicting this prayerful pose. Children from around the world, specifically India, Tibet and Tanzania, stand before sacred mountains. They look toward us as we look in. The art is spiritual, vibrating with an energy that unites us, the children, and the natural world. We witness unity in diversity. We sense a oneness that is more real than the divisions we create.
